Paraffin treatments are popular in spas and beauty salons but you can get the same benefits by doing it yourself at home for a fraction of the cost. Paraffin treatments help relieve the pain and stiffness around joints by reducing excess fluid from the surrounding tissue. It's used to treat tennis elbow, arthritis, bursitis, and sports injuries. It's also good for skin issues like eczema, psoriasis and dry skin.
You can purchase paraffin at health food stores. You can purchase paraffin kits that include both the paraffin and the warmer used to melt the paraffin. There are different grades of paraffin for different uses. Make sure the paraffin you purchase is for personal spa use. Place the paraffin, about four pounds is recommended, in the warmer and set the temperature to "low" or "melt" depending on the kind of warmer you have purchased. You can also melt the paraffin using a double broiler on your stove top or by using a large crock pot. If you do it this way it's important to stir the paraffin frequently. Paraffin expends as it warms so make sure to melt it in a pot that that allows for the expansion. When the temperature reaches about 125 degrees your paraffin is ready to be used. You can use a candy thermometer to test the temperature. It's very important that the temperature is not above 130 or the paraffin can burn your skin. At this point you can also add your favorite essential oils and mix it well.
Before you begin wash the area you wish to treat and dry it well. This will keep the paraffin clean so it can be reused. Rub a thin layer of unscented moisturizer over the area to be treated. This will make the paraffin easier to remove later. Dip the area (hands, feet, or pour a small amount of the paraffin on the area you are treating (neck, back, etc). adding the extra coats will keep the wax warm for a longer period of time which will give your skin and muscles more relief.
If you treated your hands of feet very kindly put them in a plastic bag. If you rented a larger area you can cover it with plastic wrap. Wrap a towel around the plastic bag or lay it on the plastic wrap. This will help hold in the heat. Keep the wax on for 15 to 20 minutes or until it cools. Once the wax cools, peel the wax off the skin. You can apply a good moisturizer to help lock in the moisture.
